In search of Sundarbans history
Sundarbans is till now like a riddle to the most of the outer world . For ever neglected. Before independence the British colonial administration had use this area just to earn revenue from here ignoring the severe damage to the unique serene environment they made by reclamation of land . After the independence it is no better but going to be bad to worst . british administration from 1770 onwords had brought hard working tribes from chotanagpur and adjacent areas for reclamation of dense forest and make those agricultural land. In the process many poor tribals were killed by tigers ,serpents ,crocodiles, pigs etc. in those days itis assumed that is the first habitation by human being in sundarbans started when the reclamation by british administration began in around1770's. But for the tireless and selfless non academic research work, fieldwork by respected kalidas dutta ,a scholarly landlord of jaynagar -majilpur of present south 24-parganas, gradually unfolded that not only in mourya period urban civilization had been here but also presence of even neolithic tools remained here.more than 100 years archaeological objects have been found by general people while digging soil for ponds, wells, for agricultural purpose, foundation of houses etc . None other than the director of archaeological department of west begal respected paresh chandra dasgupta claimed that there had been mesolithic habitation here in deulpota near hoogly river. even he reported a site from where opaleolithic tools were collected at hariharpur ,baruipur, near old ganges.
